Black Bottom
Black Bottom is a curated platform connecting consumers with Black-owned businesses—online and in their local communities.
Who We Are
-
To keep our Black dollars in the Black community as much as possible. Through supporting local businesses in our neighborhoods. As well as providing access to online businesses in the absence of a local option. Empowering our small business owners to grow.
-
Integrity, creativity, and empathy shape the way we work. These aren't just words—they’re the foundation of everything we build. We believe in putting the people first. Good people create the communities that help businesses flourish.
-
What began as a passion project has evolved into something more. We’re proud of where we’ve been and even more excited for what’s ahead. What sets us apart isn’t just our process—it’s the intention behind it. We take time to understand our community and the things that serve them.
Black Bottom History
-
Detroit's Black Bottom was a historic African American neighborhood that became a thriving hub of Black culture, commerce, and community life during the Great Migration, when hundreds of thousands of Black Americans fled the Jim Crow South in search of better opportunities in northern industrial cities. Despite being largely the product of forced segregation, Black Bottom flourished into a vibrant neighborhood filled with jazz clubs, Black-owned businesses, churches, and close-knit families.
-
Black Bottom was located on the lower east side of Detroit, roughly bounded by Woodward Avenue, Gratiot Avenue, and the Detroit River. Redlining and discriminatory housing policies confined Black residents to this area, making it both a product of systemic inequality and a community that thrived despite those constraints.
-
Black Bottom was demolished in the 1950s under the banner of "urban renewal," its residents displaced to make way for the Chrysler Freeway (I-375) and Lafayette Park. The neighborhood represents both the resilience and creativity of Black Detroit and the systemic destruction of Black wealth and community through government-sanctioned displacement — a story that echoes across dozens of American cities and remains a painful symbol of how infrastructure projects were weaponized against communities of color.
